A person that knows about many arts and sciences is called a “Renaissance man,” or “Renaissance woman.”

Madam Curie
Discovered the medical use of X-Rays and many other amazing things.
Nelson Mandela
Led the fight against aprataid in South Africa, suffered decades of imprisonment and went on to become president.
Deng Xiaoping
Deng Xiaoping, chief architect of China's economic reforms, and opening-up process.
When time permits I will expand this list. History is a requirement for understanding the world today and building a better one in the future. But, just admiring the greatness of the past won't get the work done.
